Juntos por el ambiente or “Together for the Environment” is a community recycling program led by Marea Verde Panamá, in partnership with the Fútbol con Corazón Foundation and the Local Goverment of Parque Lefevre.
Its purpose is to offer a free and accessible home recycling solution for the communities of Puente del Rey and Villa del Rey, in Panamá Viejo, where the Río Abajo River one of the basins of the Siete Cuencas project—flows into the bay.
At the heart of the program are two community leaders, Lizka and Yohanna dedicated neighbors who understand the realities of their surroundings and serve as a direct link between Marea Verde and local residents. They encourage neighboors to join the initiative, guide the registration process, and coordinate the collection of recyclable materials twice a month.
Thanks to their ongoing commitment, more families today have a practical alternative to manage their waste responsibly, reducing pollution and strengthening local environmental awareness.
The program gives residents the opportunity to sort their waste: plastics, cans, cardboard, and more — and hand it over free of charge for proper management.
In doing so, Juntos por el ambiente helps reduce the waste that ends up in streets, streams, and rivers, directly contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.
The collected materials are transported for sorting and recycling, closing the loop in a sustainable way.
Beyond collection, the program organizes educational activities and workshops for children, youth, and adults in the community. These sessions teach participants how to separate waste correctly, reduce single-use plastics, and adopt sustainable habits at home.
This program shows that when communities, institutions, and social organizations work together, real change is possible in urban waste management.
At Marea Verde, we believe that big changes begin with small actions.
